Educators invest heavily in curriculum materials, technology, and assessment tools. Nature offers additional cognitive support already present in the school environment—quietly influencing attention, mood, and memory.
Biophilic design introduces patterns and elements of nature into learning spaces. This approach supports students' cognitive systems in ways that align with how the brain has evolved. What the Brain Says About Nature
Human development occurred in natural settings over many generations. Natural stimuli—think leafy views or the sound of water—gently engage the brain’s attention in the background. Hi Randy, Yay! This is another great article, full of learning-enhancing ideas and impactful how-to suggestions. What made the content really come alive for me were the visuals. As I let myself touch into the scenes you created, I felt at once stimulated and calmed, and animated yet peaceful. I also sensed a delight in the aesthetics of the learning environment; a gently flowing but structured loveliness infused your depictions of classroom life. Finally, I felt a hopefulness that I would belong in these classrooms and that perhaps I could help others also feel they belonged.
Oh, one small question arose for me: did you mean the reference to grades in the title to be a stand-in for what you later represented as learning progress and achievement? When I read the title, I was thinking there’d be a distinct section on grades, given that grades, at least in traditional, norm-referenced grading systems, evoke such significant and often heavy and unhappy feelings for kids, parents, and teachers. But then, as I read on, I figured out that you didn’t mean to get into anything too value-laden, complex, or controversial about grading, or to explore alternatives to traditional grading approaches. You simply were using that term to mean achievement. Did I make the right interpretation?
