Like beams holding up a building, teachers give “scaffolding” support—temporary structures that guide students until they can stand on their own. Sometimes that scaffolding is a word of encouragement, sometimes a math hint. But often, it’s not words at all. It’s eye contact.
Eye-line psychology is the study of how sightlines—what we notice, avoid, and return to—shape behavior, attention, and connection. In classrooms, where students direct their gaze determines not only what they see, but also how they feel and how well they learn.
Environmental psychology has long shown that humans instinctively follow lines of sight. In a museum, eyes are drawn to the featured painting. In a bustling square, we orient toward open vistas. In a classroom, the same invisible forces are at play: orientation, circulation, and sightlines quietly cue students about what matters.
How Eye-Lines Shape Learning
Orientation: Desks aligned toward a single focal point send one kind of message: the teacher is the center. Arrangements like circles or angled clusters invite shared participation and shared gaze.
Students facing toward the teacher are more likely to receive eye contact across the room. Eye-tracking studies show students in the front-and-center “T-zone” receive 3–8× more gaze than peers elsewhere. This unequal gaze distribution shapes who feels seen.

Neurology confirms it: direct gaze activates the brain’s social network, boosting empathy and attention. Students are more motivated to stay engaged when they feel seen.

Dear Randy, I loved this piece because, to me, it beautifully shows that Artificial Intelligence can boost Somatic Intelligence. Somatic intelligence isn't a term that's used much in schooling, but I think it applies to the practices you describe, like mindfully making eye contact with kids, consciously reaching out to them with a gentle, encouraging gaze, moving closely toward and with them rather than standing apart at the center and front of the room, and using posture and body language to convey openness to students' questions, interests, and work products. Further, Classroom Reimagined shows how the design of the visual environment can help kids develop their own somatic intelligence--their own sense of how their gaze, attention, movement, posture and body language can lift their learning to a more satisfying and higher level.
